Interview Techniques

The interview is the most important part of the job application process. This is were any potential employer gets a chance to assess you and how you will fit into their organisation, so it is vital that you present yourself in a positive, professional and effective way.

It is important to prepare for any interview by researching the organisation, knowing your CV, anticipating difficult questions and possible responses and having questions ready to ask the interviewer.

The best way to research any organisation is to look at their website, study their marketing literature and any other information that may be available. Has the organisation been in the legal press lately? If so, why? It is important to be up to speed on the organisation you are interviewing at and, in particular, issues relevant to the role you are applying for. You should also ensure you are up to date on current affairs as many interviewers will ask questions on recent topical issues.

You should also make sure you know your CV and what you have written. Consider your CV and any questions that may arise from it. How will you answer those questions? You may be asked about your current role and duties or the decisions you made that lead you to where you are today. Be sure to prepare considered and reasoned responses to such questions.

Any interview will always include time for you to ask questions of the interviewer. This is an ideal opportunity to show your understanding of the organisation by asking relevant and thoughtful questions.

Presentation is also an important factor. Make sure you are dressed in a presentable and professional manner. Research the venue beforehand so you know where you are going and allow yourself plenty of time to get there. If you are early it will allow you time to freshen up and calm any nerves.

Further information can also be found from many legal recruitment websites which often contain useful information on interview techniques and the job search process.
